Question

State two periodic properties which are responsible for the formation of an ionic compound.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Ionic compound

  1. The compound formed due to the attraction between the oppositely charged ions.
  2. This attraction leads to the formation of chemical bomds.
  3. Example: NaCl (Sodium Chloride)

Part 2: Periodic properties responsible for ionic compound formation

  1. Ionization energy: The participating metal atom must have low ionization energy so that it can release electrons and form a cation.
  2. Electron affinity: The energy released when an electron is added to an atom is called electron affinity. The participating non-metal should have a high affinity so that it can attract electrons easily and form an anion.
