State two reasons why tank irrigation is popular in South India.

  1. South India does not have perennial rivers and hence the tanks form an important source of irrigation.
  2. It is difficult to dig wells in the region due to the presence of stony grounds. Tanks can easily be made by collecting rainwater in hollow depressions.
