Solution

  • When ammonium hydroxide solution is added to zinc nitrate solution in small quantity then, a white gelatinous precipitate of zinc (II) hydroxide is formed. The reaction is as follows :
  • Zn(NO3)2+2NH4OHZn(OH)2+2NH4NO3
    (Zinc(II) (Ammonium (Zinc(II) (Ammonium
    nitrate) hydroxide) hydroxide) nitrate)
    white gelatinous ppt.
  • When ammonium hydroxide solution is added to zinc nitrate solution in excess then, the white gelatinous precipitate of zinc (II) hydroxide is dissolved to form a clear solution of Tetraammine zinc(II) nitrate.
