Solution

The observations are as follows:

When ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) is added to zinc(II) nitrate solution Zn(NO3)2,then a white colored gelatinous precipitate zinc hydroxide (Zn(OH)2) is formed.

  • The reaction can be represented as:

Zn(NO3)2(aq)+2NH4OH(aq)2NH4NO3(aq)+Zn(OH)2WhiteGelatinousppt.

This precipitate is soluble in excess ammonium hydroxide solution. This is due to the formation of Zn(NH3)4OH2 .

  • The reaction can be represented as:

Zn(OH)2(s)+4NH4OH(aq)Zn(NH3)4OH2(aq)+4H2O(aq)Colorless,soluble
