Question

State two true or false:

In an experiment on Osmosis if external pressure is applied on a dilute solution less water will pass into the concentrated solution.

Solution

Effect of pressure on osmosis:

  1. During osmosis, the movement of water normally occurs from dilute solution (low solute concentration) to concentrated solution ( high solute concentration).
  2. Now, if external pressure is applied to the dilute solution, more water molecules will move across the membrane towards concentrated solution.
  3. This happens because the pressure increases the rate of the movement of the solvent from the side where pressure is high towards the low pressure side.

Final answer:

The given statement is

false

Osmosis is the flow of solvent into solution of higher concentration from solution of lower concentration through semi-permeable membrane. Which of the following is incorrect?

a. Osmotic pressure is the external pressure required to be applied so that there is no net movement of solvent across the membrane.

b. Reverse Osmosis is a process where you demineralize or deionize water by pushing it under pressure through a semi-permeable Reverse Osmosis Membrane.
