State two types of plastids. Write one function of each.

There are three types of plastids present in plants.

Chromoplast:

  1. Chromoplast is a colored plastid.
  2. It can be yellow, orange, or red in color.
  3. It contains carotene and xanthophyll which are pigments.
  4. They give color to flowers and fruits and help in the pollination and dispersal of seeds because of attracting color.

Chloroplast:

  1. Chloroplast is a green-colored plastid.
  2. It contains chlorophyll and carotenoids and performs photosynthesis.
  3. They give color to green leaves and green young stems.
  4. Chloroplast is a kitchen of the cell as it makes food for the plant.

Leucoplast:

  1. They are colorless.
  2. They store various food products, e.g. amyloplasts- store starch, proteinoplasts or aleuroplasts- store proteins, elaioplasts- store fat.
  3. They are present in root and underground stems.
