Question

State two ways by which electrons can be made to leave the metal surface.

Open in App
Solution

Free electrons cannot leave the metal surface because they do not have sufficient energy. By providing excess energy in different forms, we can make these electrons leave the metal surface. This can be done by:
  • providing heat energy. This is called thermionic emission.
  • providing light energy. This is called photoelectric emission.
