Question

State two ways of increasing the frequency of vibration of a stretched string can be increased.

Solution

Two ways of increasing the frequency of vibrations in a stretched string are:

1) By increasing the tension on the string. On increasing the tension in the string, the wave speed increases hence frequency increases.

2) By decreasing the length of the string. When the length of the string is changed, it will vibrate with a different frequency. Shorter strings have higher frequency and thus higher pitch.

Hence, increasing the tension on the string and decreasing the length of the string are the two ways of increasing the frequency of vibration of a stretched string can be increased.
