Solution

Basicity and Aqueous Solution of Ammonia NH3:

  • An aqueous solution of ammonia is basic in nature due to a lone pair of electrons on its nitrogen atom, i.e. it turns red litmus blue, methyl orange yellow and colourless phenolphthalein pink.

Therefore, when a piece of moist red litmus paper is placed in a gas jar containing ammonia, it turns blue.
