Solution

  • Ethene(C2H4) is an unsaturated hydrocarbon as it contains carbon-carbon double bond C=C.
  • When Ethene(C2H4) is added to the orange-colored Bromine(Br) solution in the presence of Carbon tetrachloride(CCl4), due to the formation of Ethylene bromide(BrCH2-CH2Br), the bromine solution becomes colorless.
  • The chemical reaction is as follows

CH2=CH2(g)Ethene+Br2(g)BromideCCl4BrCH2-CH2Br(g)Ethylenebromide
