Solution

Pure water is a hypotonic solution as compared to inside of dry resins. When dry resins are placed in pure water for some time, they will absorb water by endosmosis and will swell.

Sugar water is a hypertonic solution as compared to the inside of swelled resins. After they are placed inside sugar solution, they will shrink again due to loss of water by exosmosis.
