Reaction summary

A reddish-brown precipitate of Ferric hydroxide FeOH3 is formed when Sodium hydroxide solution NaOH is added to a solution of Ferric chloride FeCl3. This reaction is an example of double displacement reaction.

Skeletal reaction

FeCl3aq+NaOHaqFeOH3s+NaClaq

  • There are 3chlorine Cl atoms on the reactant side, while on the product side, there is 1chlorineCl atom only. To balance chlorine atoms, a coefficient of 3 must be added in front of NaCl.
  • However, by this sodium Na count on the product side becomes unbalanced. To balance sodium atoms, a coefficient of 3 must be added in front of NaOH. Through this, all the elements in the reaction become balanced.

Balanced chemical reaction

FeCl3aq+3NaOHaqFeOH3s+3NaClaq
