Open in App
Solution

Reaction with copper(II) sulphate(CuSO4):

  • Ammonium hydroxide NH4OH reacts with copper(II) sulphate solution to form a pale blue colored precipitate of Cu(OH)2 which dissolves in excess of ammonium hydroxide to form a deep blue colour soluble complex salt.
  • CuSO4(s)+2NH4OH(l)Cu(OH)2(aq)+NH42SO4(s)
  • Cu(OH)2(aq)+NH42SO4(s)+2NH4OH(excess)(l)CuNH34SO4(s)+4H2O(l)

Therefore, when ammonium hydroxide solution is added to copper sulphate in excess, deep blue colour soluble complex salt is formed.
