In capacitor circuits, the current in the circuit must first flow to the plates of the capacitor to make potential difference across them. As the current rises, the voltage between the two plates and as the current falls voltage falls but the voltage follows the current’s lead a fraction of a second. So, current and voltage are out of phase and the current is always leading the voltage.
