The discriminants of a quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0 is given by:

D=b2-4ac

  • If D>0, the roots are distinct and real.
  • If D=0, the roots are equal and real.
  • If D<0, the roots will be imaginary.

The given equation can be simplified as:

(x-1)(x+2)+2=0x2+2x-x-2+2=0x2+x=0

The discriminant of the given quadratic equation x2+x=0is computed as:

D=12-4·1·0D=1D>0

Since the discriminant is greater than zero.

Hence, the roots are distinct and real.
