D=b2-4ac

  • If D>0, the roots are distinct and real.
  • If D=0, the roots are equal and real.
  • If D<0, the roots will be imaginary.

The discriminant of the given quadratic equation 2x2-32x+12=0is computed as:

D=-322-4·2·12D=92-4D=12D>0

Since the discriminant is greater than zero.

Hence, the roots are distinct and real.
