If a seed is inserted upside down into the soil, the stem will grow upwards and the root will grow downwards. Because living thing shows a phenomenon called sensitivity. Roots are sensitive to gravity (positive geotropism) and it grows in the downward direction. A stem is also sensitive to gravity but shows negative geotropism (away from the gravity) that's why stems grow in the upward direction.
