Question

State whether the following statement is true or false :
Spores produced by the bread mold plant are actually its seeds.

Open in App
Solution

True.

Bread moulds are fungi. Bread moulds reproduce by spores that can be considered as their seeds. Spores serve a function analogous to that of seeds in plants. Produced and released by specialized fruiting bodies, such as the edible portion of the familiar mushrooms, fungal spores germinate and grow into new individuals under suitable conditions of moisture, temperature, and food availability.

According to Whittaker's system of classification, bread mould is placed in a different kingdom named fungi and not in the kingdom Plantae. However, if we compare bread moulds with plants then we can compare their spores with seeds of plants.
