Question

State whether the following statements are true or false :

(a) The pressure exerted by a liquid depends on the area of base of its container ?

(b) A drinking straw works on the pressure exerted by the liquid filled in a soft in a soft drink bottle in which it is placed.!

Open in App
Solution

i) False

It depends on the parameters like the density of the liquid, the height of the liquid column and temperature of the liquid .We know that temperature of the gas is directly proportional to its pressure.

Please note that ‘Pressure’ is expressed as masscm2 . The size of the bottom of a container makes no difference.

(ii ) False

A drinking straw does not work on the pressure exerted by the liquid filled in the soft drink bottle in which it is placed.

This happens entirely due to difference in air pressure. When air is sucked out of the straw, a low pressure region inside of the straw vis a vis outside the straw which is surrounded by liquid is created. . The pressure exerted by the liquid becomes now more than the pressure inside the straw. To make this difference in pressure even , liquid from outside enters inside the straw hence compensating for the pressure drop.
