  • Pharynx: It is the common pathway for both food and air to pass through. It then opens into two passages- the windpipe (trachea) and the food pipe.
  • Trachea: It is also known as the windpipe through which the air reaches the lungs. The opening of the trachea is covered by a muscular flap called the epiglottis. Its main function is to prevent the entry of the food into the windpipe while swallowing.
