Solution

The correct option is A I - F, II - T, III - T
Disposal of solid wastes has become a major concern in the present times because the amount of waste generated has increased drastically due to increased population and urbanisation. Disposing of solid wastes by burning (incineration), burying in sanitary landfills (areas where solid wastes are compacted, dumped into trenches and covered with dirt), etc. often lead to environmental pollution, which is undesirable. Thus, the most sustainable solution to the problem of waste disposal is to reduce waste generation. Hence statement II is true.

In accordance with the 3R principle of reduce, reuse and recycle. We can reduce waste generation by reusing waste items or recycling them to be used in the preparation of new products. Disposal of used glass bottle must be avoided as they can be reused for the purpose of storing water at home or can be recycled into decorative lamps, planters, etc. Thus statement I is false.

Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance that persists in the environment even after being dumped in the ground or buried in landfills. Thus the reduction in the use of plastic is the only way to reduce the generation of plastic wastes as there are not many effective ways to dispose of plastic without harming the environment. Replacing plastic bags with cotton, or bags made of other natural fibres such as jute, for the purpose of shopping or carrying items is one way of reducing the use of plastic. Thus statement III is true.
