Question

State whether the given statement is True or False.

CuO can't be reduced by carbon but it can be reduced by H2.
given : ΔGf for CuO= -129.7 kJ mol1, CO= - 137.2 kJ mol1 H2O = - 237.2 kJ mol1

Open in App
Solution

CuO+CCu+CO

ΔG=ΔGf(CO)ΔGf(CuO)

=137.2+129.7=7.5kJ

CuO+H2Cu+H2O

ΔG=ΔGf(H2O)ΔGf(CuO)

=237.2+129.7=366.9kJ

Both the reactions are spontaneous means CuO can be reduced by both C and H2 and thus the given statement is False.

CuO+H2→Cu+H2$= - 237.2 + 129.7= - 107.5 kJ$
