Question

State whether the motion of objects P and Q is uniform or non-uniform motion.

Solution

We can find out whether a body is moving with uniform or non-uniform motion by studying its distance-time graph.

A moving body which covers equal distances in equal interval of time, then the body is said to be moving with uniform motion, when a moving body covers unequal distances in equal interval of time, the body is said to be moving with non-uniform motion.

In graph I, the body covers 1 m in 1st second, 4 m in 2nd second, 4 m in 3rd second, 3 m in 4th second and so on...

In graph II, the body covers 0.5 m in 1st second, 0.5 m in 2nd second, 1.5 m in 3rd second, 1.5 m in 4th second and so on...

This implies P and Q both motions are non-uniform motion.
