These polymers contain exchangeable cations or anions.

In cation exchange resin, sodium ions are exchanged by calcium and magnesium ions from hard water. Thus, helps in softening of water.

Example :- zeolites alumino-silicate polymer with exchangeable sodium ions :

2NaAlSi2O6+Ca2+Ca(AlSi2O6)2+2Na+

The hardness is thus removed.

Similarly, anion exchange resins have exchangeable anions including Cl,SO24,OH.

An anion resin is one that exchanges negative ions.
