Pyramid of numbers represents the number of organisms in a food chain graphically in a pyramid. Each bar represents the number of individuals at each trophic level. Number of organisms in each successive level decreases rapidly until there are very animals at the top, because the amount of food available at each trophic level to support the organisms decreases. For example, if you think of any aquatic ecosystem like ocean, the phytoplantktons i.e. the producers will be maximum, consider about 10,0000. Primary consumers like zooplanktons feeding on the phytoplanktons will be less numerous around 10,000, small fishes feeding on these zooplanktons can be 1000 in number and then then the large fishes or sharks feeding on the primary consumers will be the least in count, around 100. Therefore the pyramid of numbers in an aquatic ecosystem is always upright.
