T cells not only destroy virus-infected cells, but also play a very crucial role in suppressing cancer in the body. When a cell becomes cancerous, the MHC molecules start displaying the cancer altered protein fragments instead of the normal protein fragments. These altered MHC molecules are recognised as non-self, and these infected cells are destroyed in the same way as virus-infected cells.
