Always the flow of nutrients in any given ecosystem is cyclic. Plants absorb nutrients from the soil. Then they pass these nutrients/minerals to heterotrophs. When the animals and plants die, the decomposers break the complex nutrients into simpler substances. Ultimately all such simple substances including minerals return to the soil. The atmosphere also acts as a reservoir of few nutrients.
