Question

State whether upthrust will increase or decrease if the volume of a solid increases.

Open in App
Solution

  1. When an object is partially or wholly immersed in a fluid, an upward thrust acts on it.
  2. This upward thrust is directly proportional to the volume of the body immersed in the fluid.
  3. Upthrust by a liquid on an object is calculated as -
  4. Upthrust=Volumeoftheobject×densityoftheliquid×gravitationalacceleration

Hence, if the volume of the solid increases then the upthrust also increases.
