a. The absence of a charismatic leader in the Congress party: There was a political vacuum after the death of Nehru and Shastri. The senior leaders fielded Mrs. Gandhi but she was politically inexperienced. It was only later that Mrs. Gandhi became highly popular.
b. Split within the party: One would not regard this as one of the reasons for the failure of the Congress in 1967 elections. It was only later, after the defeat that the internal differences within the Congress and the formal split within the Congress between Congress (O) and Congress (R) came about.
c. Increased mobilisation of regional, ethnic and Communal groups: This was the reason of the defeat of the Congress to a certain extent as the 60s witnessed growing regional disparities, rise of communal groups and economic problems, which proved to be disastrous for the Congress. This period also witnessed the worst Hindu-Muslim riots.
