Question

State which would have greater effect on kinetic energy of an object doubling the mass or doubling the velocity?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The kinetic energy formula is given as Ek=12mv2 where Ek=kinetic energy, mis the mass, and v is the velocity of the moving body.
  2. So, Ekm and Ekv2.
  3. This indicates, that kinetic energy, Ek is directly proportional to the mass and square of velocity.
  4. So, we can conclude that, if the mass of the body is double then Ek of the body is also doubled.
  5. However, if the velocity of the body is doubled, then the Ek of the body becomes four times.
Hence we can state that the kinetic energy has a greater effect when the velocity of the body is doubled.
