For example, in water molecule, each H atom has oxidation number of +1 and oxygen atom has oxidation number of -2.
Addition of the oxidation numbers of all the elements in H2O=2(+1)2=0
Statement 2: Generally oxidation number of oxygen is -2 for most of the compounds. There are certain compounds in which the oxidation number of oxygen is not -2.
For example, in hydrogen peroxide H2O2, the oxidation number of oxygen is -1.
