  • Bacteria are protected by a cell envelope composed of a rigid cell wall and a plasma membrane. The cell wall composed of disaccharides and amino acids gives bacteria structural support. Almost all bacteria possess a lipoproteinaceous plasma membrane that performs many functions, including transport, biosynthesis, and energy transduction.
  • The plasma membrane of archaebacteria, as well as eubacteria, have the same type of lipids but differ in their bonding. Archea membrane lipids have ether bonds whereas bacteria have ester-linkages.
