Question

Statement-1 : Ammonia at a pressure of 10 atm and CO2 at a pressure of 20 atm are introduced into an evacuated chamber. If Kp for the reaction NH2COONH4(s)2NH3(g)+CO2(g)is2020atm3, the total pressure after a long time is less than 30 atm.
Statement-2: Equilibrium can be attained from both directions.

Solution

The correct option is D Statement-1 is false, Statement-2 is true
Option B is the right answer.
The value of the equilibrium constant is much larger than 1.
Hence the equilibrium mixture contains most of the products.
The initial pressures of ammonia and carbon dioxide are 10 atm and 20 atm respectively.
The total initial pressure is 30 atm. At equilibrium, some of the gases are converted into solid NH2COONH4.
Hence, the total pressure will be slightly lower than 30 atm.
Also the equilibrium can be attained from either direction.
