A population has certain attributes which are not shown by an individual and one of them is birth rate. An individual has birth and death but a population has birth rate and death rate. Birth rate is defined as the ratio of the number of individuals born in a population in a given period of time to the initial total population.

The size of the population tells us a lot about its status in the habitat like the outcome of competition with another species, the impact of a predator or the effect of a pesticide application etc.

The population size, technically called population density, designated by "N", need not necessarily be measured in numbers only, for sometimes numbers are either meaningless or difficult to determine. Chlamydomonas in a pond, bacteria in a petri dish, and fish population for a given area are examples of relative density to determine the population.
