When the water is stored in the dam, it possesses potential energy. After the dam is opened, the water starts flowing downward towards the turbine. Therefore, potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. As the water hits the turbine, it forces turbine to rotate. The rotation of turbine produces electrical energy. So, potential energy of the dam is converted to electrical energy.
