Each spermatogonium is a diploid cell and contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. Some spermatogonia divide mitotically twice, each forming 4 identical primary spermatocytes. After this the primary spermatocytes enter meiosis. Each primary spermatocyte completes the first meiotic division to form two haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes.
