Immediately following the withdrawal of Prince Leopold, the French ambassador to Prussia, Count Vincent Benedetti, approached King William I to request an assurance that no member of his family would again be a candidate for the Spanish throne. William I did not agree. When Otto von Bismarck, the Prussian Chancellor, was informed through a telegram of this conversation, he chose to edit the telegram and publish it making it seem like a major altercation. This incited conditions for the breakout of the Franco-Prussian war.
