Average speed=Total distanceTime taken and Average velocity=Total displacementTime taken
In a particular interval if distance covered and displacement is equal then average speed will become equal to average velocity.
For arbitrary small interval of time the magnitude of displacement is equal to the length of the path.
So instantaneous velocity is equal to the instantaneous speed in magnitude.
Both the statements are correct but statement 2 is not the correct explanation of statement 1.
