Statement 2: NADPH and CO2 are produced in the light-independent reaction.

Identify the correct statement(s) regarding photosynthesis.

Solution

In plants, the light reactions are carried out in the thylakoid membranes of organelles called chloroplasts. The enzymes and pigments needed for trapping the light energy and synthesis of ATP and NADPH are embedded in the thylakoid membrane.

The light-independent reactions of photosynthesis take place within the stroma. It contains enzymes that work with ATP and NADPH to “fix” carbon from carbon dioxide into molecules that can be used to build glucose. Hence, only carbon dioxide is produced in the light independant phase of the photosynthesis.
