Maltose contains two glucose units. But the aldehydic group on the second glucose unit (the one on the right) is not involved in glycosidic linkage formation. So, it can participate in the reaction and can be reduced. Thus, maltose is a reducing sugar.
Both glucose units in maltose are in a six membered pyranose form. Clearly, assertion and reason both are correct. But, reason is not a correct explanation because being in a six membered pyranose form does not mean that maltose should be reducing sugar. Consider cane sugar. Its glucose ring is also in pyranose form, but it is a non reducing sugar.
