Plant tissue culture involves in-vitro cultivation of plant tissues in an artificial medium under aseptic conditions.
When a part of the plant is grown on a culture medium, it forms an undifferentiated mass of cells called callus.
Each callus has the ability to give rise to a new plantlet. The plantlets are then sowed in the soil so that they can grow into mature plants. Hence plant tissue culture is a redefined method of vegetative propagation.
The major advantages of this method is that the plants with desirable characteristics such as disease-resistance, excellent quality, high yield etc., can be produced in a large scale with limited space.
