Plants perform photosynthesis in the presence of light only. During photosynthesis, plants release oxygen and take up carbon dioxide. Plants perform respiration all the time, where they take up oxygen and release carbon dioxide. But in the presence of light, the rate of photosynthesis is more than the rate of respiration. So, more carbon dioxide is taken by the plant, rather than released, during the day. During dark, since there is no photosynthesis happening plants release carbon dioxide and take up oxygen.
