Root nodules are mostly present in the leguminous plants like pulses, beans, soyabeans, etc. These nodules provide shelter to certain bacteria, Rhizobium. In return, these bacteria fix the atmospheric nitrogen for the plant, since plants cannot use the atmospheric nitrogen directly. This type of association where both plant and bacteria are mutually benefited is called symbiosis.
