The period of pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, one trimester comprises 3 months or 12 weeks. Most abortions are done during the first trimester of pregnancy. Voluntarily terminating pregnancy within a particular time frame is known as Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP). MTP is generally safe upto 12 weeks of pregnancy i.e. first trimester. It can also be terminated in later trimesters but the risk becomes high, as the foetus becomes more intimately attached or associated with the maternal tissues.
