Iron production starts with the transportation of raw materials from the mines to the plant. In the plant, iron ore is melted and mixed with limestone in a vertical shaft called a blast furnace. Coke is used to heat ore. Through this process stone waste called slag is removed and molten iron is separated. Iron in this form is called pig iron. In the next stage, pig iron is further purified by melting in the presence of oxygen, which is called oxidation.
