Stapes is the stirrup-shaped bone. It is the smallest bone in the human body. It is the third bone of the three ossicles in the middle ear. The hearing part of the inner ear is a spiral shaped structure called the cochlea. It looks like a snail shell. Cochlea is filled with fluid and contains the organ of Corti lined with tiny hair cells. The vibrations transmitted from the middle ear causes tiny waves to form in the inner ear fluid, which stimulates the tiny hair cells. They convert these vibrations into nerve impulses and send them to the brain, where they are interpreted as sound.
