The unequal distribution of land and water is a major factor that affects surface ocean temperature, apart from prevailing winds, latitude, and ocean currents. The surrounding land areas of an enclosed sea directly affects its surface temperature. Higher the land area, higher would the extent of contact of water with the land regions, increasing the surface temperature. The Baltic Sea is enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, northeast Germany, Poland, Russia and the North and Central European Plains. Thus, the surface temperature of Baltic Sea would be higher than the open Pacific Ocean.
