Solution

The correct option is C Statement 2 is correct while statement 1 is incorrect
Biogas, commonly known as gobar gas in India is a naturally occurring gas that is produced by the breakdown of organic matter by anaerobic bacteria such as methanogens. It is a mixture of gases composed of methane (major amount), carbon dioxide, and very little amounts of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide.

Biogas is a renewable energy source and can be used for cooking and lighting. Cattle dung is a rich source of methanogens and it can be used for the generation of biogas.

The brilliant technology of biogas production was developed in India by the joint efforts of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).

KVIC stands for Khadi and Village Industries Commission but not Khadi and Village Industries Committee.

Hence, statement 1 is incorrect.

Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are specifically designed to treat sewage to make it less polluting. In India large quantities of sewage is generated but unfortunately the untreated sewage is discharged into water bodies as there are very less STPs. The untreated sewage causes severe water pollution and increases the risk of waterborne diseases.

Therefore, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has initiated Ganga Action Plan and Yamuna Action Plan to save these major rivers from pollution. It is proposed to build a large number of sewage treatment plants under these plans, so that sewage can be treated before it is discharged into the water bodies.

So, statement 2 is correct.
