Question

STATEMENT - 1 : ZXA undergoes 2 α decays, 2β decays (negative β) and 2 decays. As a result the daughter product is
Z2YA8.
STATEMENT -2 : In α decay the mass number decreases by 4 unit and atomic number decreases by 2 unit. In β decay (negative β) the mass number remains unchanged and atomic number increases by 1 unit. In γ decay, mass number and atomic number remains unchanged.

A

Solution

The correct option is B Statement-1 is True, Statement-2 is True; Statement-2 is a correct explanation for Statement-1
In α decay, 42He is released. Hence the atomic mass becomes A(2)(4)=A8 and atomic number becomes Z(2)(2)=Z4.
Then in β decay, 01e is released. Atomic mass becomes (A8)+(2)(0)=A8 and atomic number becomes (Z4)+(2)(1)=Z2.
In γ decay, atomic mas and atomic number remain unchanged.
