The phenomenon of day and night results from both the Earth's rotation and Earth's being opaque.

The Earth's rotation includes spinning of Earth on its axis, which causes different parts of the Earth to face the sun at different times. The side of the Earth-facing gets the sunlight and has daytime.

Also, as the Earth is opaque, the sunlight cannot pass through the Earth. Thus, the part of the Earth-facing the sun acts as an obstruction for the side opposite to it. So, the opposite side is dark and has night time while the part which is directly facing the sun has daytime.
